The sea might be thought of as the last bastion of open space, a place of freedom and at times of lawlessness. However, as we are all too aware pollution now plagues the world’s seas and the wide open horizons they once offered are becoming increasingly populated with windfarms, oil rigs and shipping traffic. The Sea Within Me is a new sculptural work made using seaweed gathered on the shores of Lindisfarne island. This seaweed has been desiccated by the wind and sun transforming the once succulent glistening plants into bonelike monochromatic objects. Put together to form a head dress, this work conjures thoughts of sea monsters or sea gods, or the folkloric figure of The Greenman, but rather than the image of rebirth and rejuvenation this bleached out version may be the augur of a less abundant future.
